How it all started?

The Kamov Artist-in-Residence Program – Creators in Residence was founded in 2011 by the Department of Culture of the City of Rijeka with the aim of enhancing the cultural offer, fostering art, and supporting the non-institutional art scene.

The program bears the name of the most renowned Rijeka writer Janko Polić Kamov (1886–1910). Kamov's literary style was characterized by an impressive artistic depth and avant-garde approach, which expanded the horizons of Croatian and global literature in that period. Inclined towards reevaluating existing structures, Kamov, throughout his short yet eventful life, challenged literary conventions and the societal mindset of his time. Therefore, the guiding principle of Rijeka's artist-in-residence program is the idea of questioning, provocation and progress.

To date, the Kamov artist-in-residence program has welcomed over 500 artists, theorists and creators from Croatia and around the globe. It has established collaborations with numerous cultural organizations, institutions and individuals dedicated to pushing the boundaries of traditional media and practices.

The program provides artists with a space for inspiration, research and experiment in a new environment, giving them time and support to conceptualize and develop their ideas and projects. In addition to writing residencies and production residencies in the field of performing arts, the program specifically supports research, and open-ended and post-studio residencies.
