• Kristina Pranjić

  Kristina Pranjić is a researcher working at the intersection of avant-garde history and theory, intermedial art, and the environmental humanities. Her work maps transnational and so-called “peripheral” avant-garde networks in Central-Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. She investigates how artistic practices, through experimental forms, media, and collective modes of action, critically engage with social and political issues. Her particular interests include early ecological ideas, visual, performative, and material practices, as well as questions of language, defamiliarization, and alternative epistemologies.

  She is currently affiliated with ZRC SAZU, where, in collaboration with the University of Graz, she is developing the project ADRIATIC AVANT-GARDE (Eco-Transversal Remapping of Northern Adriatic Avant-Gardes). Within this project, she is constructing an ecocritical and ecofeminist framework for remapping the history of Northern Adriatic avant-gardes, proposing “water as method” as a transversal approach to connecting artistic practices, sites, and archives. She previously led a postdoctoral project on the Yugoslav interwar avant-garde with a focus on Dadaism and is the author of the monograph Yugoslav Avant-Garde and Metropolitan Dada (Ljubljana: Založba Sophia, 2024). She has conceptualized and curated three international conferences with accompanying artistic programs devoted to avant-garde practices, along with edited volumes (The World as Non-Objectivity; Cosmic Anarchism; Avant-Garde and the End of the World). She has also co-developed several interdisciplinary artistic research projects in educational contexts, focusing on ecological imaginaries, industrial heritage, experimental artistic practices, and critical approaches to contemporary social issues. She teaches literary theory, European avant-gardes, and ecocriticism at the University of Nova Gorica and is affiliated with its Research Centre for the Humanities.

  The ADRIATIC AVANT-GARDE project addresses the need to reframe cultural and artistic narratives in response to the ongoing ecological crisis, with a focus on underrepresented avant-garde art in the Northern Adriatic (Italy, Slovenia, Croatia). While traditional studies have emphasized major Western European cities, this project highlights the innovative contributions of peripheral regions. By integrating avant-garde art into environmental humanities through ecocritical and ecofeminist perspectives, it examines the relationship between art, nature, and ecological discourse. Rather than relying on national frameworks and linear genealogies, the project departs from the material and infrastructural conditions of the sea and, across three temporal layers—the historical avant-garde, the neo-avant-garde, and contemporary intermedial practices—examines how ecological and material sensibilities emerge as situated practices: through imaginaries of the sea, more-than-human relations, and critiques of extractivist regimes.

  During her residency, Kristina Pranjić conducts preparatory research for the development of an interactive map through conversations with artists, curators, and cultural practitioners, engagement with the collection and publications of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, and fieldwork. The map will, among other things, render local cultural ecologies visible and encourage reflection on how ecological layers are inscribed in artistic practices.

  MMSU in Rijeka founded in 1948, in its long tradition offers a committed support to innovative ways of approaching, producing and presenting art. From its very beginning the Museum has been building reputation of one of the most prominent visual art institutions in Croatia, entrusted with presentation of Croatian artists at prestigious international art events such as: Venice Biennial 1962, 1997, 2007, 2010, Sao Paolo Biennial 1967, 2004 etc. 

  The Museum rounds its programming around visual art education, parallel to different modes of exhibition concepts that address new discursive possibilities and transform it into a place of inspiration, idea exchange and active participation. Under the motto openness, creativity & engagement, together with artistic, cultural and community organizations, Museum furthers visual arts research, collaboration and exchange within the region and internationally, while aspiring to reach increasingly diverse audiences and to work in a close relationship with the community.

  Museum’s collection offers a diverse range of artistic visions with over 8,000 artworks dated from the end of the 19^th century to the present day. From 2017 Museum is located at new address, Krešimirova 26c, in ex-industrial complex Rikard Benčić. Since then, some important exhibitions were organized at MMSU in the framework of the pre-program and program of Rijeka 2020 - European Capital of Culture, i.e. Tomislav Gotovac: Crisis Anticipator - Don't Ask Where We're Going (2017), Vlado Martek: Exhibition with Many Titles and Goran Petercol: Don't Worry About Poetics, They Will Arrive on Their Own in 2019 and David Maljković: With the Collection in 2020..
